Change to our Driving Lessons Grants
...driving lessons Grants for eligible Motability Scheme customers. From 1 July 2024, new applicants will need to pass their theory test before applying. What does this mean for applicants? Driving Lessons Grants will continue to fund 40 hours of driving lessons. Previously, grant recipients could access 14 hours of lessons before they passed their theory test. Once they passed the test, they could access the remaining 26 hours. This change to our Driving Lessons Grant means that grant recipients will now access all 40 hours of grant-funded lessons in one go, resulting in an uninterrupted learning experience. ...Leanne lives in Liverpool with her son, Ben. She leases a Fiat 600 through the Motability Scheme and received a grant for Driving Lessons. New beginnings When Ben was transitioning to high school, Leanne knew it was time to learn to drive. “The school we wanted to get him into was a little bit further away, so I needed to get a car.” Leanne has EDS (Ehlers-Danlos syndrome), meaning her joints dislocate easily. She uses walking sticks to get around. Using public transport made her anxious. When she read about Driving Lessons Grants on the Motability Foundation website, she thought they would solve a lot of problems. ...stuck in the house. If, at times, my disability won’t let me go out, my car is like a second house, a safety box around me, so I can get out. “I praise Motability Foundation to the highest – the Driving Lessons Grant gave me a new lease of life. It’s amazing what getting out can do for you. I feel useful.”

...driving lessons for disabled people in Northern Ireland and received a Reducing Barriers to Driving Grant from us in 2023. When we visited earlier this summer, the Mobility Centre Manager Angela Hutchison explained that our grant-funding, means they now have more driving instructors and more learners on the roads: “This March and April, we completed 246 lessons, which is almost what we completed in a whole year, previously,” says Angela.
