Nigel Fletcher, Chief Executive Officer
At Motability Foundation, we believe deeply that accessible transport isn't a luxury; it's a fundamental human right.
It’s the cornerstone of independence, the gateway to social inclusion and the essential link to economic participation for disabled people.
The transport landscape
The landscape around us is shifting rapidly, with new technologies, evolving societal expectations and a growing recognition within policy circles of what truly inclusive mobility looks like.
It’s a dynamic and exciting time and the environment presents opportunities to drive real, systemic change.
While the Motability Scheme provides invaluable personal mobility solutions, we know that true transport equity extends far beyond individual vehicles.
It encompasses accessible public transport networks, safe and inclusive urban infrastructure and challenging the societal attitudes that too often create unnecessary barriers.
How we help
This is where the Motability Foundation steps in. Building on decades of unique insights gleaned from Scheme customers, we've been proactively leveraging our voice and expertise to champion these wider issues.
We're proud of the work we have done so far in advocating for change, including:
- Using robust evidence and research to shape future policy, ensuring inclusive design and accessibility are central to transport planning. For example, our research into the barriers that disabled people face when using public EV chargepoints led to us working in partnership with UK Government on the PAS1899 accessibility standards.
- Partnering with transport planners, industry leaders and technology innovators to embed accessibility solutions from the ground up.
- Funding pioneering projects that explore future mobility solutions – from micromobility to shared transport - ensuring they are designed with universal accessibility in mind.
We believe that a truly accessible transport ecosystem is within our grasp. It's a future where everyone can move freely, participate fully in society and lead independent lives.
Together we can
This future requires collective effort. Last summer, we got the ball rolling, inviting a room full of industry leaders, innovators and those with lived experience to feed into the change we want to see.
I pledged my commitment to the cause. We invite governments, industry and the public to join us in making it a reality.
