Individual grants

We proudly support individuals and their families through our Scheme-related grants and our Access to Mobility grants.

Motability Scheme-related grants provide financial help, to Motability Scheme customers, towards the costs of leasing a suitable car or wheelchair accessible vehicle.

Each year, we provide a small number of means-tested grants to people most in need of financial help to use the Scheme.

This can include funding towards advance payments for cars, wheelchair accessible vehicles, and adaptations for drivers and passengers.

Our Access to Mobility grants provide financial help towards mobility support for disabled people, outside of the Motability Scheme. These are:

  • Driving Lessons – Our grants help Scheme customers who have a provisional driving licence to learn to drive, or offer familiarisation lessons to help grant funded customers get used to adapted driving controls.
  • Access to Work - The government Access to Work grants fund equipment for disabled people to use at work. Our Access to Work grant reimburses  the Social and Domestic Contribution people pay to use the equipment outside of work.
  • Transitional Support - This grant may be available from the Motability Foundation for customers who leave the Motability Scheme following an unsuccessful DLA to PIP reassessment, where they lose their qualifying benefits and who meet the grant criteria.
  • Additional Transitional Support - This grant provides additional support to Motability Scheme customers who have to leave the Motability Scheme following an unsuccessful DLA to PIP reassessment, where they lose their qualifying benefits and face extreme financial hardship.

Cars and Vehicle Adaptations

If the car or adaptations you need through the Motability Scheme cost more than you can afford, we may be able to help.

Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV)

If you need to travel whilst staying in your wheelchair, you may need a WAV. These are specially adapted vehicles that let you travel safely without needing to transfer from your wheelchair.

Bespoke Passenger Solutions (BPS)

If you need personal care whilst travelling in a WAV, you may need a BPS. This grant is for disabled people who need additional adaptations or facilities in order to travel in their vehicle.

Independent Driving Solutions (IDS)

If you need to drive from your wheelchair or internally transfer, you may need an IDS. This grant is for independent drivers who need to transfer inside the vehicle, or drive while in their wheelchair or need hi-tech controls in a standard car.

Driving Lessons

The Driving Lessons Grant is only for disabled people who are on the Motability Scheme and meet the additional programme criteria.

Access to Work

Through our Access to Work Grants, we can reimburse the total Social and Domestic Contribution for specific equipment.

Transitional Support

This grant may be available from the Motability Foundation for customers who leave the Motability Scheme due to DLA to PIP stopped allowance assessment, and who meet the grant criteria.

Additional Transitional Support

Is available to help Motability Scheme customers who cannot continue with their lease because of a benefit reassessment by the DWP and are unable to meet the costs of a replacement vehicle or the adaptations which they need.
