Additional Transitional Support

If you’re eligible for a grant through the Transitional Support Programme but are still in extreme hardship, you may be able to apply for Additional Transitional Support.

This additional grant is for Motability Scheme customers who cannot continue with their lease because of a benefit reassessment by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and are unable to meet the costs of a replacement vehicle or the adaptations which they need.

The reassessment could be when moving from DLA to PIP.

We have no role in determining who receives mobility allowances, these are awarded by the DWP.

However, Motability Scheme customers may be impacted by the Government replacing Disability Living Allowance (DLA) with Personal Independence Payments (PIP).

These changes can affect Motability Scheme customers and we have established transitional support options to support those impacted.

Access to mobility grant

How we can help

Motability Foundation can provide grants towards keeping you mobile. We currently focus help towards the cost of vehicle adaptations and the cost of obtaining a vehicle after you leave the Motability Scheme.

Our Additional Transitional Support programme currently prioritises funding to people who need help towards:

  • Buying a replacement vehicle: we will consider the need for a vehicle and the benefit that having it provides to the disabled person’s everyday mobility; for example, if your family has dependant children and disability-related equipment to carry. Motability Foundation may offer increased support in recognition of the additional cost of buying a large vehicle. If you are leasing a highly adapted vehicle, we may provide a grant which enables you to buy it.
  • Buying vehicle adaptations: if you need to replace or transfer Scheme vehicle adaptations but are unable to pay for them upfront, we may provide a grant to help with this.

Who can apply

You can apply if you're a Motability Scheme customer who is unable to continue with your lease because of a reassessment by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and unable to meet the costs of a replacement vehicle or the adaptations which you need.

The DWP reassessment could be when moving from DLA to PIP. It is important to note that if you are awarded PIP following a review and wish to re-join the Motability Scheme, further grant assistance will not be available for three years from when you were awarded help from the Additional Transitional Support programme.

Our grants are means tested to ensure that our funding supports those with the greatest need.

This means we will look at your financial situation, including household income and savings, to determine if you are able to make a contribution.
